6 Things to Expect from the 2013-14 Champions League Season - Bleacher Report

Surely, things can't be this appalling again. The 2012-13 Champions League campaign was a genuine low point for English teams, accounting for their worst collective outing in Europe's premier club competition in 17 years.

Chelsea and Manchester City were both drawn in tricky groups, and while the Blues redeemed themselves with an exhilarating run to claim the Europa League crown, the Citizens disappointed with some limp, naรฏve displays.

Arsenal and Manchester United advanced to the knockout rounds but failed to progress further as hoped. Both received unenviable draws in Bayern Munich and Real Madrid, respectively, but while the Gunners were outdone by their own incompetence and the Red Devils'partly at least'by the referee's incompetence, neither side will be proud of their European campaigns.

But new seasons bring fresh optimism, and as last season's four prepare for renewed efforts, an improvement can be expected.

Chelsea will surely improve under the near-inevitable stewardship of Jose Mourinho, while Manchester City would be devilishly unlucky to receive as tough a group stage draw as they've had in the last two seasons.

The competition will surely be a major test for incoming United boss David Moyes, but he will likely have the backing and the squad to take his new club into the latter stages.

As for Arsenal, they may not have been the neutrals' choice to take the final top-four spot, but Gunners fans will be hoping that a slightly less chaotic summer may result in improved form in Europe's top club competition.

Tim Curry, 67, recovering at his LA home after suffering a major stroke - Daily Mail

'He is doing great': Tim Curry is recovering at his LA home after having a stroke

Tim Curry, the star of the Rocky Horror Show, is recovering after having a stroke at his home in Los Angeles.

The British actor, 67, is said to be 'doing great' following the collapse.

Curry rose to fame as Dr Frank-N-Furter in the cult musical and went on to a successful stage and film career.

Few details were available about the stroke last night, but sources close to the actor denied suggestions that the stroke had made it difficult for him to speak.

His Los Angeles agent Marcia Hurwitz said: 'Tim is doing great. He absolutely can speak and is recovering at this time and in great humour.'

Curry, who is unmarried and lives in the Hollywood Hills in a Spanish colonial-style villa, is one of Britain's most successful character actors.

In 2011 he was scheduled to appear in a Sir Trevor Nunn production of Rosencrantz And Guildenstern Are Dead in Chichester and London but withdrew from the production at the last minute citing ill health.

At the time, he was said to be having debilitating asthma attacks after a chest infection.

The extremely private actor rarely talks about his personal life and it is not known if he has a partner.

He was born in Grappenhall, Cheshire, in 1946. His father James, a Methodist Royal Navy chaplain, died aged 45 when Curry was only 12.

His mother Patricia, a school secretary, died from cancer in 1999 and his older sister, Judy, died in 2001 after having a brain tumour.

Curry's first professional stage role was in the musical Hair in 1968, the year he graduated from Birmingham University.

Screen star: Tim as Dr. Frank-N-Furter in 1975 cult musical The Rocky Horror Picture Show

He hit the big time in the original 1973 London production of The Rocky Horror Show, playing the mad transvestite scientist Dr Frank-N-Furter. He went with the show to New York and Los Angeles before playing the same character in the 1975 film.

Critics described his performance as 'a mixture of Joan Crawford and Burt Lancaster' and 'Mick Jagger, David Bowie and Marc Bolan all in one'.

For many years he was reluctant to talk about the show, worried that it would typecast him and detract from his later projects.

In 1981 he was nominated for a Tony award for the lead role in the play Amadeus. Other stage roles included The Pirates Of Penzance in 1982 and Me And My Girl in 1987.

Between 2004 and 2007 he played King Arthur in the Monty Python musical Spamalot on stage in Chicago, Broadway and the West End. More recently, in April last year he appeared in Eric Idle's play What About Dick? at the Orpheum in Los Angeles.

His films include Annie, Legend, Home Alone 2 and Charlie's Angels.

Match Juniors Slim Fit Petite Casual Cargo Mini Shorts Outdoor Camping N' Hiking #A5021 (W29"(US 10 - Hips:38.5 inches), Camo) Reviews
I just received these shorts in the mail and was very pleased at their quality, especially for the price. Unfortunately, their size estimates are seriously wrong - I made sure to measure myself before ordering, and couldn't even pull the shorts on. I normally wear a US size 6 and am going to try to order what they consider a US 10 but I'm not confident they'll be large enough. Wish they had larger sizes, these shorts are really cute. I never thought at size 6 that i'd be ordering the largest size a company has to offer...
- Rachel

I love these shorts but I didn't realize they run small when I placed my order. Be sure to order up a size or 2!

The truth about Urlacher - Chicago Tribune

May 23, 2013|Dan McNeil

Those of us in the opinion-making business are guilty of wanting it both ways.

We require our superstar athletes to dazzle us not only with their performances, but also fill our notepads with colorful quips. Then when a jock offers total transparency and says something we deem terse or disrespectful, we sour on them for not being more user-friendly.

So it went with Brian Urlacher, who in his 13 years in a Bears uniform exhibited both candor and kindness, but also was capable of being an uncooperative, disrespectful spoiled brat.

On and off the field, there was way more good than bad with Urlacher, who announced his retirement Wednesday after watching his phone not ring for the past nine weeks. It's the right move for the moody middle linebacker, who might not have been able even to pass a physical if an NFL team had extended him a contract offer with which he was comfortable.

While it wasn't completely Urlacher's choice, I applaud the soon-to-be 35-year-old for waving the white flag now and sparing us a 21st Century edition of Dick Butkus. The once-menacing Butkus hung around far longer than his body was capable. The No. 51 I saw play in the early 1970s was a mascot, not the formidable force who was so amazingly captured by NFL Films video shot in the '60s.

Many opinions have been given on Urlacher's place in Bears/NFL history, as well as whether his often-surly disposition should leave Bears fans with a bad taste in their mouths. Here are some things I believe to be the undisputed truth on Urlacher:

'Urlacher is the Bears' most dominant defensive player in franchise history.

Forget Bill George and everyone else who played in or shortly after the leather helmet era. Same with Butkus, who made his bones tossing around little white running backs on slower playing surfaces.

Urlacher played his position with ferocity and unparalleled speed. He changed games with key takeaways and willed his team to victory.

Mike Singletary? Not even the best linebacker on the woof woof Bears of the '80s. In the Bears' only Super Bowl title season of '85, both Wilber Marshall and Otis Wilson were more impactful players.

'Urlacher's observation last season the Bears are the only team in the division with a fanbase that boos its own team was idiotic.

'Fans and media who chastised Urlacher last November for congratulating former teammate Danieal Manning after the Houston safety intercepted a Jay Cutler pass deserved Urlacher's middle finger.

One thing I always enjoyed about Urlacher was his boyish grin while on the "battlefield." A high five or knucklepunch is a harmless gesture representative of good sportsmanship.

'Before his third season, Urlacher voiced perspective and reverence for Butkus and Singletary at a black tie event called "Decades of Dominance," hosted by ESPN radio. "This is embarrassing," Urlacher humbly said to me backstage before taking his place on the dais. "I've done nothing to deserve being on the same stage with those guys."

'Urlacher's lowest moment at the lectern was when he waged war with local media shortly after a loss to the Lions in '07. His "Go to FoxSports.com" news conference was nothing shy of embarrassing.

'Urlacher was at his best against Green Bay. In Week 2 of the '04 season, Urlacher thwarted a Packers scoring attempt just before halftime, stripping the ball from Ahman Green. Mike Brown recovered and returned it 95 yards for a touchdown, giving the Bears a 14-3 lead. The underdog Bears upset Green Bay 21-10.

'When Urlacher underwent cervical spine surgery in the winter of '08, he demonstrated a sense of humor when he checked into Northwestern Memorial under the pseudonym "Dr. Richard Kimball."

'Urlacher's fling with Paris Hilton was the male version of "the walk of shame."

'In a television role as a talking head, Urlacher would be a decent hire. As a talk show host, Urlacher will fail as miserably as Cutler did last fall.

'Despite the accomplishments of the Raven's Ray Lewis (two Super Bowl rings, including an MVP performance in SB XXXV) Urlacher deserves to be in the Canton Class of 2018.

Lewis was the best ever at the position. Making Urlacher wait an additional year because he also played middle linebacker is the type of logic that should be reserved for baseball writers when they select for Cooperstown.

Special contributor Dan McNeil hosts "The McNeil and Spiegel Show" weekdays from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on WSCR-AM 670.

Ed Garments Women's Moisture Wicking Short, BLACK, 10. 8422 Review
These shorts are true to size and extremely comfortable. The fabric is smooth and soft, with a faint sheen, as you would expect from microfiber. They look great after the initial wash. They are very wrinkle-resistant. I have not had to test the stain resistance yet. Construction appears good, and the front pockets are a good, useful size, which is important to me.The only thing that I cannot comment on is how they will wear over the long term, since I haven't owned them for long. I will update this review if I have any problems.

Sports media NESN, CSNNE compete for Bruins coverage - Boston Globe

Ratings for the Bruins-Rangers Eastern Conference semifinal series on NBC Sports Network have been outstanding, with Game 3 drawing 1.752 million viewers, making it the third-most-watched conference semifinal ever on NBCSN. In Boston, it earned a 16.09 household rating, the highest ever for a semifinal game on the network in this market.

The numbers are great. But entering Thursday night's Game 4, the suspense was lacking, with the Bruins holding a 3-0 lead. That's the main reason the game was bounced to CNBC, sandwiched between 'Mad Money' and 'American Greed: The Wealth Builder Club,' while the more compelling Red Wings-Blackhawks game got the prime spot on NBCSN.

But while the Bruins series wasn't particularly competitive through three games, the competition among Boston's regional sports cable networks certainly was as they vied for viewers before and after NBCSN's game broadcasts.

NESN, the home of the Bruins during the regular season and the first round of the playoffs, has been aggressive in trying to retain viewers even while burdened with the disadvantage of having its studio programming primarily on NESN Plus. A scroll runs across the screen during NESN's Red Sox telecasts reminding viewers of Bruins coverage on NESN Plus, and personalities such as Tom Caron and Dale Arnold have emphasized the Bruins programming via Twitter.

Meanwhile, Comcast SportsNet New England has touted itself as the best Bruins pre- and postgame coverage in town, and studio host Michael Felger was quick to note after Game 3 that the NESN postgame show had signed off a few moments earlier. And CSNNE did own Nielsen bragging rights when it came to ratings after that game, earning a 1.6 in the 10:15-10:45 p.m. window, which more than doubled NESN Plus's 0.7. CSNNE also stayed on the air a half-hour longer, earning a 1.1 from 10:45-11:15.

CSNNE also had higher ratings after Game 1, earning a 0.9 to NESN Plus's 0.2. The Games 1 and 3 postgame shows are the second- and third-highest rated in CSNNE history, after Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final two years ago.

But NESN also deserves a significant benefit of the doubt, because when its postgame coverage was on NESN rather than NESN Plus following Game 2, its numbers were outstanding, earning a 3.2 to CSNNE's 0.3 in the 5:45-6:45 p.m. window. Much of the coverage that day was moved to NESN because the Red Sox game was in a rain delay. Some of the audience may have been tuning in to check on the Sox, but it's also apparent that the unfamiliarity of where to locate NESN Plus can be a hindrance.

Overall, NESN has outrated CSNNE on average during the postgame programming (0.8 to 0.4). And the Game 2 boost from being in the Red Sox window on NESN helped it to a 1.6-0.9 advantage through three postgames.

Honest assessment

The personality traits that made NBC Sports Group so eager to lure Michelle Beadle away from ESPN late last year and feature her as a core personality on upstart NBC Sports Network also must make the network honchos cringe from time to time.

Four months after the debut of NBCSN's sports and pop culture program 'The Crossover,'' hosted by Beadle and former Channel 7 sports reporter Dave Briggs, the show, which has struggled to find an audience in its daily 6 p.m. time slot, has been revamped after a brief hiatus.

Briggs, who wasn't a particularly popular figure among colleagues during his time in Boston (2004-08), is out, though he will remain at NBC.

And Beadle, utilizing the snarky wit and matter-of-fact candor that made her such a popular personality in her previous gig co-hosting ESPN's 'SportsNation,'' didn't attempt to hide her satisfaction with the change during an appearance on 'The Dan Patrick Show' Tuesday.

When Patrick kidded that she 'kicked her co-host to the curb,'' she replied, matter-of-factly, 'Wow. Just wasn't working. When a relationship's not working, you change it.'

Patrick: 'So, this was a divorce?''

Beadle, deadpan: 'Sure. It was an arranged marriage to begin with.''

Patrick: 'Were there fights between you two?'

Beadle: 'We're not friends. That's fine. We don't need to be. We're very different human beings, and that was it. It wasn't a good pairing. I've had good pairings and bad pairings.'

That Beadle could get along with 'SportsNation' co-host Colin Cowherd, who only sporadically mixes in charm among his relentless trolling, for so many years suggests a high tolerance for imperfect co-hosts.

Imaging is everything

Some readers have noted that WEEI has recently changed its imaging voice ' the person whose name is usually unknown but who is responsible for many of the recorded promotions and station identifications and so on. The new voice is Brian Lee, who may sound familiar ' he is the voice of NBC's 'Sunday Night Football.' He replaced longtime imaging voice Jim Cutler, who parted ways with the station at the end of April. It should be noted that this isn't to be confused with the work of Pete Gustin, who is the voice of WEEI's creative bits ... WEEI recently pursued the NFL Network's Albert Breer and CSNNE's Joe Haggerty, both of whom are frequent contributors to 98.5 The Sports Hub. It's uncertain what their roles would have been at WEEI, but both decided to remain at The Sports Hub ... ESPN Boston's Field Yates will be part of a rotating cast of panelists on ESPN's new daily pro football program 'NFL Insiders.' It's further indication that Yates, who also co-hosts ESPN's 'Fantasy Underground' podcast and provides NFL content for 'ESPN Insider,' has his share of supporters among ESPN's talent scouts. The show, which debuts Aug. 5, features Suzy Kolber, Adam Schefter, Bill Polian, and Chris Mortensen, among others. But what may be more notable is what it doesn't feature ' contributions from former players.
